Program Officer - African Medicines Regulatory Harmonization, African Union Development Agency

Mr. Alex Juma Ismail is a seasoned regulatory pharmacist with over a decade of experience in medicines regulation across Africa. His expertise spans the assessment of quality and clinical dossiers, GMP and GCP inspections, and regulatory systems strengthening.

Currently serving as a Technical Officer at the African Medicines Agency (AMA), he supports the establishment of continental regulatory functions, focusing on evaluating medical products, developing scientific opinions, and institutionalising technical committees to advance regulatory convergence among African Union Member States.

Prior to the AMA, he was a Programme Officer at AUDA-NEPAD under the AMRH initiative, where he supported regulatory systems strengthening, developed harmonised frameworks, and piloted continental functions for medical products evaluation. He also brings experience from national regulatory authorities and the pharmaceutical industry across East and Southern Africa, and has chaired expert working groups for regional programmes such as the EAC and SADC.

Mr. Ismail holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy and an MSc in Clinical Research, and is currently pursuing a second MSc in Pharmacy Administration and Regulatory Policy, along with a PhD in Regulatory Science. He is also a qualified WHO Global Benchmarking Tool (GBT) Assessor.
